7-17-11 Report Capt Sonny

Great weekend with some good friends. Had Alex Strogen on the boat both Sat and Sun. Alex and Shore Thing founder, Capt Mike Thompson went to college together at A&M Galveston. Over the years, Alex usually stops in and charters for a few days before heading back off on business. True to form, Alex showed up on time Saturday morning, but with a little baggage. Seems he talked Capt Mike into coming along on the trip. Was blown away to have the old boss on the boat for the day. From start to finish, the wise cracks an insults never stopped. Yes, we did catch fish but had to work for most of them. Anyone who was out there Saturday knows how rough it was. The Hydra Sport had all she wanted getting into the 9 Mile area to find shelter. We never fished farther east than 3-Mile. Did the stick an move all day to put a respectable box of fish together. Tried to find shell banks all day or points of moving water. Had live wells full of shrimp and finger mullet and used the heck out them. With the dirty water we put most of the live bait on the bottom for the best results. Did find Capt Kyle in 3 Mile working some diving birds. Got one flock over from him and boated several nice keeper sparkle trout in no time. The dynamic duo worked hard, but put 38 specks,3 reds, and one flounder in the boat. Never a dull moment with Capt Mike on the boat, and yes, he still has IT!
Sunday was Alex flying solo and me. Alex only had a few hours to fish before he headed back to Texas. Seas were calm, and winds were light. Made the crossing to the LA Marsh in no time. Bait, birds, boats and big trout were everywhere. Used the live bait on the carolina rigs, fishing oyster bottoms. Had all the live wells full of shrimp, mullet and croakers that were left over from the other boats on Saturday. Croaker worked very well, followed by the live finger mullet. The live shrimp worked almost too well, it would get hit with in the first few seconds by everything swimming(whites, specks, ground mullet, and others). Alex did get to fight a massive bull red for 10 minutes before it spit the hook. Headed in early with 25 trout for Alex.
