9-29-11 Report(Capt Sonny)

Happy Birthday to Capt Kenny Shiyou hope you had a good one. Fished Monday and Wednesday of this week. Monday was the Nicholson father and son team(Glen and Sam) by way of Vicksburg, MS and Austin, TX. Weatherman got us again, calling for 5 to 10 and giving us 15 to 20. The south west wind gave us a bunch of options in the LA marsh so we headed to 9 mile. Water was clean and loaded with shrimp and minnows. Trout were there and we still had to pick through the whites and small specks. Left em biting to pound a few banks for some reds. The wind was howling by then but we found a few. Used live finger mullet "against da grass" to get 5 perfect slots reds and one big doormat flounder. Went back to the trout bite in 9 mile and it was much better. Set up shop at the mouth of one drain with water pouring out of it. Shrimp and trout were both jumping out of the water. Popping corks with clear or blue moon soft plastics underneath worked best for us. Took a side sea at 30mph home and broke our triple sighting streak, going 0 for 0. Ended the day with 22 specks, 10 big whites, 5 reds and 1 flounder. Lot of action but many throw backs
Wednesday was Tyler Cohen and the boys from West Point, MS. This crew has been going with us for years now an are always up for a challenge. Wednesday would definitely be a challenge. Rough, low, dirty water sent us everywhere and back looking for fish. Started back in 9 mile and worked plenty of shore lines looking for reds. The best action we had was a shell bank deep inside the marsh. For every slot red we caught you had to pick through either rat reds, cat fish or sting rays. On our way out of the marsh, we stopped on one small drain, no more than 10 feet wide. We could see two reds coming out of the shallow drain with their backs an tails completely out of the water. We picked off those two and got another one. Made it home before long before that nasty squall line came through. Ended a long with only 6 slot reds and two lone trout. Fun crew, but tough fishing...
