Can't believe it myself, but we fished the last two days! Weatherman finally got it right when he called for 20-25mph winds. Since we had a small window before the big blow on Friday morning, Capt Kyle, Capt Kenny and myself stayed in the Bay with the Pat Calhoun group. All of the boats were loaded with live shrimp, dead shrimp, crab and pogies for bait. Took advantage of the east wind and went to work on the black drum. All three boats put a massive load of tasty puppy drum in the box. All of the sea monsters were photographed and released. Kyle and Kenny's crews both were able to find diving birds on the leeward(Pass Christian) side of the Bay. They were able to box a pile of big whites and nice specks before the big wind came. All of us tucked tail and ran for the river. For the last part of our venture, we picked through some croakers, rat reds and small trout. The crews met back at the world famous Bay Marina. Got a picture of the pile, but did not get a count. The guys let me clean the drum, there was easily over 30. Safe to say we had a cool breeze for the work at the cleaning table.
Saturday, the wind was howling and seas were rolling. I felt it would be safer to go west and fish out of Lafrances by the Pearl River. Took the Wheeless group out for a few hours and found a few fish. Water was dirty from the big blow, but grinding it out we found some fish. The flounder we found were big and the few trout we got were nice too. Puppy drum, rat reds and croakers kept us busy between the bigger keeper fish. Popping corks against the banks of wind blown banks(in protected bays) worked the best. Tight lined soft plastics tipped with dead shrimp did the trick on the big flounder. Came in early and gave the boys a windy day discount. We had a 4 boat trip for Sunday, but canceled it due to unstable weather. Capt Kenny said it best about this wind and rough seas, "I ain't scared of the water, but I respect it". Please plan your day, have fun, and be safe.
