We at Shore Thing Fishing Charters would like to wish everyone a very safe and Happy Holidays. All the guides have been enjoying their time with families and friends. Capt Kenny and Capt Kyle have been thinning the deer population throughout MS. Capt Matt and myself got to fish the last two days in picture perfect weather. Matt had the Capstick group for the last two days and did great both Wed and Thur. Wednesday I had three generations of Reinharts on the boat. Dad, son, and two grandsons were along for the ride. Both boats stayed in the bay with pretty green water to fish the bridges and reefs. All day, the bite was slow but steady. Matt's crew and mine would get a sheepshead here, a flounder there, along with puppy drum and reds. My crew was all about the two youngsters and they did well. They kept 9 sheepshead, 5 puppy drum and 3 flounder(many others released). We fished bottom rigs with either shrimp or crab all day.
Thursday, Shore Thing veterans, The Lorber Group(Gus, Taylor and Charlie) were back again. Too pretty of a day not to head to the LA marsh. Calm seas and cool weather all day. The water was clean and clear every where we went. Matt and I have not been to the marsh in weeks but we were glad to be back. Both boats spent the majority of the day sight fishing for red fish. Found perfect conditions even with the low water, but no big numbers of reds(at least on my boat). Matt's boat seemed to land on the fish at most of his stops. Taylor did get the first red of the day in two foot of water with a clear and chartreuse cocahoe minnow. I could hear Matt on the VHF while his crew was working a nest of big sheepshead. We opted to soak some left over crab over some oyster beds in deep water while Matt's crew headed back to the ponds. Highlight of the day came when Taylor and Charlie doubled up on 40 plus pound black drum. Both boats made good moves, as Matt's crew found a big school of perfect slot sized reds at his last stop. His three man crew bested 13 reds with spinner baits, sight fishing.
The good folks at Okuma sent us some of the Trio 30's spinning reels to try out. After seeing what one of these little winches can do to a 45lb black drum, I am a believer. We have been using them to turn big reds and sheepshead out of structure the last few weeks as well. Looking forward to putting these things to work.
