5-29-12 Report(Cat Island Trip Included)

Been out at the Cat Island House and missed several days worth of reports, for that I am sorry. Hope everyone had a safe and fun Memorial Day on an off the water, I know we did. On wit da fishing report.... Fished Thursday with my old buddy Larry Konzcol and his relatives from Cleveland Ohio. Capt Matt and I ran the two boat trip, and were met with a little bit of wind in the AM. Made a grind of it and came in with a very respectable catch of speckled trout, white trout, ground mullet, flounder, red fish and triple tail. Most everything was caught on the live bait in the LA Marsh. Friday through Monday I was working out at the Cat Island House for the Strogen/Thompson group. Strogens were in town from South Carolina and Shore Thing Founder Capt Mike Thompson made a good go of things. First trip we have ever had children out there(two 2 year olds and a 4 year old) and I am happy to report, there were no Bo Bo's. This was not our usual Cat Island trip, but it was a good un. We did the usual food and fishing but we had plenty of beach trips for the youngsters to play. We threw the cast nets and went shark fishing to keep the little ones busy. Mike even took his crew to go looking for cobia(0 for 1). Young Mitch, who wore his Shore Thing Charters t-shirt all 4 days won top angler honors. He made every single early morning and late evening fishing trip with the boys. This young man reeled in every fish, some of his trout were close to 4 pounds! We had several visitors, Mike's brother Matt and his sister in law Margaret came out for the day. Dr Don Gaddy even made an evening and morning trout trip. Fishing was great in regards to the trout, we never had to leave Cat Island(not that we were). The little guys did great, and we fished till the young ones needed naps or air conditioning. The new bait tank Walter(the Mayor of Cat Island) put in for us kept shrimp alive for all 4 days! We caught plenty of trout, and could have absolutely slaughtered them, but kept the young anglers entertained and occupied as best we could. Don't think my live wells will ever be the same, they got plenty of attention from the kids. Had almost picture perfect weather for Mike, Lindsay, Alex, Vivian, Mitch, Mason, and Charlie. Truly one of the most memorable fishing trips to Cat Island ever... Got a few hours sleep and was up again for the Watts group, party of two from Texas. Grace and John are here for a kayak trip, but with 20+ MPH winds this morning kept us in the boat. Tried to limp across to the LA Marsh, but it got way to sporty. Stayed in close to home and pounded it out on the banks till the wind layed. They are here for the reds, and we actually caught a few. This dynamic duo pitched spinner baits all morning long. Grace got 3 small reds and we even boated 7 huge flounder! Since they are not keeping fish we broke out the tagging gear when the wind layed down for the triple tail. Was not the calmest water, but we made it work. The good folks at the Gulf Coast Research Lab will be receiving 7 tag cards from this crew. I did talk them into keeping 1 nice triple tail for supper and we did miss one going 8 for 9 for the day! The other three Shore Thing boats were forced to fish in close due to the angry seas. Captains Kenny, Kyle and Matt had the Brent Jones group party of 9 back again for another meat haul. Saw the pile of fillets at the skinning shed and they did great in close. Think they had close to 100 big white trout, some specks, reds, flounder, sheepshead, and some good triple tails. Not sure of the exact numbers but it looked like wonderful day in less than perfect conditions. Trying to play to catch up and I know I missed some of the fishing reports from when I was at the Island. Matt and Kyle have been updating the Shore Thing website reports and Kenny has been sending his pics. Should be up to speed between that and the pics. ****SHORE THING Fishing Charters**** Check us out on You Tube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdJjkK7ldsk&context=C497653dADvjVQa1PpcFOwoDwX2vSzY4P5FRg4Nz-_nX2fhO9IImg= With four boats available, small and large groups are welcome.
