Been trying to keep up with the holiday honey do's, but still managing to fish when we can. Yes we are open and yes the fish are biting.
Had some great Shore Thing Veterans on board last week for one of the better redfishing trips I have had in a very long time. Uncle Jess and the Mighty Mitch wanted to fish the marsh. Tide and wind limited what we could do on the sparkle trout. Low low water and an east wind murked up my go to spots. Looked like it was gonna be an easy day when Uncle Jess got a good bull red on his second cast(photo and release). Mitch followed up with a keeper speck. That one trout would have the fish box all to himself for the next few hours. 4 stops and many casts later, we found the right combination. A shallow pond, that emptied into a deep ditch was all it took.
We ran the bow into the mud and cast into the mouth of the pond. First cast with a spinner bait got a slot red. For the next 30 to 45 minutes, it was almost every single cast on the reds. We actually had rat reds sitting right under the boat, you had to cast far to get out of them. Mitch an Uncle Jess caught us 15 on the popping corks/soft plastics tipped with dead shrimp. Once that was over, they caught a few on the spinner baits and released em. I have been on some great red fish bites over the years, but this one will be at the top of the list. Just glad my buddies Uncle Jess and Mitch got to experience it.
Helped Capt Kenny Shiyou and the Southern Anglers of Mississippi(Sams Club) gather some Christmas presents this week for those that may not be as fortunate as some of us. All year long, the SAMs Club members raise money to purchase bikes for kids in the area. Some of these kids are in need of a little extra Holiday Cheer. The club tries to do it unknowingly to the public(whoops). I figured it was a good time to let folks know what a wonderful job these people do for the community. This year close to 60 young boys and girls will be getting brand new bicycles, thanks to the Southern Anglers. Walmart was kind enough to discount the price, many thanks Walmart! For many of these youngsters, this will be the first bike that they have ever gotten. Not bad for a bunch of old smelly fisherman. Great job guys!
