Have been taking advantage of this cold, nasty weather, doing some much needed maintenance on the boats and equipment. We get asked regularly about who we use for trolling motors, electronics, trailers, engines and tackle. Figured we would let everyone know how we do it, and remind you all that now is the best time year to get this stuff knocked out. There is still fishing to get in on, but cold, windy, rough, low water days could not be better a time of year to get your boat ready for spring.
Gotta say I was pretty darn impressed with Shamps Outdoors(228-234-6131) in regards to “Re-Birth” of my Minn-Kota trolling motor. If my trolling motor was a horse I would have shot it in August, but it kept working. The fact that they are local, do great work, good prices, and quick turn around makes it a no brainer. The owner Randy even met me in the cold rain to pick up my trolling motor. The foot, head, shaft, handle and wires were all in bad shape. He made my 2 ½ year old, very very used 101 lb Minn Kota run and look band spanking new for a very reasonable price. They are on HWY 53 in Long Beach, MS
My Garmin 4208(3 years of heavy use) was on its last leg. The screen had some serious distortion that pretty much made it look like a scrambled cable channel. Simply called Garmin and told them what was going on with the unit. They gave me a couple of different options, and were very polite and helpful throughout the entire process. I opted to have the unit refurbished, after hearing from two buddies what a great job they do. For a quarter of the price of a new unit, the tech gurus at Garmin sent me what they call a refurbished unit. Looks like a brand new unit to me(1 year warranty also). From the time I put it in the mail till it came back was exactly a week. Would have been quicker but I just sent it regular mail. Garmin updated me throughout the entire process and even moved my waypoints over to the refurbished unit(per my request). Was already a Garmin fan, but this made me a Garmin man for life.
All of the Shore Thing boats have Sport Trail Trailers under them. None of our boats spend the night in the water, we trailer and launch every single trip. After many many combined years, several thousands of fishing trips and more miles on the roads than we care to count, we have NEVER missed a day on the water because of trailer issues. Kevin Desselle and the good people at Sport Trail not only make the best trailer in the world, they also stand behind it. Another local company(Waveland, MS) and they do service the trailers they sell. I did not have anything wrong with mine, but he recommends a check up every once in while. In an out in a day. While I was picking mine up, they had custom trailers heading to New York and California.
The entire Shore Thing fleet stays at Sid Leblancs BOAT HOUSE in Lake Shore, MS. These are the guys that make our sick boats feel better. From water pumps, wiring, power heads, battery issues, steering problems, or just “the boat sounds funny issues”, these are the guys that keep us working. When my trolling motor and GPS came in, they were a massive help with much needed advice, tools and knowledge on how to do install. I enjoy working my boat there, and yes, membership has its privileges. Was good see several Bay Rats(local term of endearment) had their boats already there getting tuned up. They know the drill…
Could not be a better time of year to get your reels serviced than right now. Heck if you got a bunch and plan on fishing regularly, send in a few at a time till Spring. We always use Mr Ronnie Farrell(Local) with RONNIES REEL REPAIR. He does inshore, offshore, spinning, bait casters of any size. He will tell you too if they are beyond repair. Sooner or later, all reels will get stiff or break. At the first sign of trouble we send em to Ronnie. He will normally meet you in the Bay or you can call him and drop them off at the BOAT HOUSE and he will pick em up there. He is very good at what he does, good prices and normally all you wait on is specialty parts(he is quick).
