Sight casting to Bull Reds in shallow water

Had a good one on Tuesday with the boys from Aqua Green fish Hatchery. After our streak was broken on the last trip, we had to get our stats up. Lil chilly but we bundled up and I brought my secret weapon. Capt Matt Tusa, the "Fish Finder" joined us for a trip to find 4 male bull reds. When we got near the LA Marsh our confidence was pretty low. The water was dark brown, it was overcast, cold, with a light chop. We just pushed on until we found some leeward banks with the cleaner water. Put some mile on the odometer, but it was worth it. Before we had the trolling motor over the side, we were seeing big reds. One 500 yard stretch of bank with a shelly bottom in 2 foot of water was to be our playground. Finally started to see packs of 6 to 10 fish, and they were hungry. Once the sun broke through and the wind laid down to nothing, it was all over. We got our 4 males in the first drift. Some came off tight lined soft plastics(Matrix Vortex in pearl or opening night), and others went for the Boat Monkey popping corks with the same soft plastics under them. We tried to tip everything with a piece of dead shrimp(insurance). Made 2 more drifts to cull out some of the smaller bulls with larger ones to guarantee they were sexually mature. Fishing for science or not, you can't beat sight casting to those big bulls on light tackle in shallow water.
To be honest, I have not kept in touch with Capt Matt or Capt Darren since that day. They have both fished but I have not gotten the details. The phone, emails, boat maintenance, honey doos and other adventures have kept me going full throttle. The calendar for the next three months is filling up nicely. If you have any plans of fishing this spring or summer, please let us know. We have plenty of boats rolling this year, but don't want anyone to miss out. The fishing this Spring looks to be fantastic!!!
