Hopefully we are not jinxing things, but the Great Trout Depression of 2014 may be ending. Happy to report, this past week was the best trout fishing in almost TWO months!!! The guides have been coming in with good numbers of school trout from the marsh. Still slinging the Boat Monkey popping corks over Matrix soft plastics. The crews that want to soak live baits have been putting some huge trout and good numbers on the dock as well. The nice weather we have been having has not hurt our efforts either.
In between the trout "recession", the big bull reds have been putting the Okuma spinning reels to the test. The boats that go over to the LA Marsh have been messing with them almost every single trip.
Capt Alex spent all week over at the Cat Island House. Three days with Capt Matt and the Baker Crew from Mobile, then 4 days with Capt Kenny and the Contractors Inc crew from North MS. He did well chasing his cobia, and both of the crews came in with good numbers of trout and slot reds.Looked like he gained 10 pounds from a steady diet of of Chef Frank McNeils Gumbo, etouffet, steaks, boiled shrimp and friend trout. Capt Kenny was texting me pics of some late evening trout they were catching. Some the topwater caught fish in the pics were pushing FIVE POUNDS!!!
Capt Tom has had one heck of a week on the trout, but an exceptional week on the triple tail. Two days, back to back, his boat caught an 18 pounder(Brinn Jones), and the next day a 20 pounder(Mr Mark). Funny thing about that is that Capt Kennys two biggest( 26 and 27 LBS) and my two biggest(22 and 24 LBS) were all back to back catches over the years. Looks as though 2014 will be the year of TOM, his boat has been on a roll.
Got to fish with a dear friend of mine, Major Scott Emmel on leave from the US Army. He is old school coast trash and wanted to get a few trout for his family. Got my buddy 15 logs and were back in time for breakfast. Did miss a nice triple tail on the way home, but we will get him next time. My boat has been celebrating Shark Week too. Some of the bull sharks we have been catching are well into the 100 POUND CLUB!!! Donnie Saucier from Carriere got one with his son Lane that was massive. We knew when his son brought in half of a would be 5 pound sheepshead that there was a stud in the area.
With school starting back, our boats are starting to free up more(weekdays and weekends). Looks as though the fishing is getting back to normal. Give us a call if you want get in on the action.
