Between the heat and the slower than usual trout bite, we have been seeing a lot of different species coming over the rail.
If the trout bite has been worth staying on, we stay on it. On the days the trout either have lock jaw or are too small to keep, we have been going after other stuff. Gotta tell yall, it has been nice mixing things up. The bull reds have been a great go to species, and most have just been showing up, unannounced. I swear we have seen more Jack Creavalle this year than the last 3 years combined. The drum, sharks, flounder, sheepshead and other critters have certainly made for some fun days when the sparkle trout aren't snapping. Just been loading for bear in the bait department. Has not been unusual to have shrimp, croakers, mullet and pogies in the live wells. If the trout are not cooperating, we have been chunking out the big baits on the big rods.
Capt Kenny, Chef Frank McNeil and myself got to make a quick run to the Cat Island House with the Hancock Bank boys. Seth and Brent brought out some of their buddies for some fishing, food and fun. Caught some huge trout, big reds, sharks and triple tail. The weather was about as nice as you could have ever wanted for one of those trips.
One thing that has helped in catching some of the bigger fish has been the new toys I got from OKUMA Tackle. They were nice enough to let me try out the new Azores 65s and RTX 80 big game spinning reels. Hands down, two of the smoothest reels I have had the pleasure of using. They have some hoss power behind them too. I have only had them less than a week and the drags have barely strained. We have been breaking them in on big sharks, bull reds, jacks, big black drum and a sting ray as big as the front of my boat. Have no doubt these reels could make quick work of big cobia, tuna and grouper.
Big thanks to the gang at Atlantic Marine for helping me with a prop/fuel issue I was having with the new Yamaha 300. Bobby helped me get a more efficient prop and man did ever help.
Got almost another Mile Per Gallon out of the prop change. Fishing hundreds of days a year and traveling thousands of miles in that time. The money I am saving traveling at the same speed makes me smile. Thanks Atlantic Marine. My buddy Dylan Leblanc at the Boat House was nice enough to help me change it out. We get by with a lil help from our friends...
