Usually we get a break this time of year, but it has still been full throttle. Capt Tom an I even ran half day trips Thanksgiving morning!
Still playing in the rivers on the windy days and heading to the LA Marsh on the calmer days. The tide has been everything for the trout and reds. Capt Tom has used the moving water to get the trout bite rolling. Some of the red fish ponds have been high and dry with the north wind and low tide. Heck, we even got stuck AT THE LAUNCH, on Thanksgiving morning, due to the low water! Judson and Travis Smith were pretty good sports about the whole thing. About all you could do was laugh...
The weekend was some of the better red fishing we have seen all year. My family friends and old Venice allies, the Domestecs put on a clinic. Some of the nephews were in town from Cali an Illinois. These boys came to work. Early in the morning they were pickin off reds like seasoned pros. We caught well over 20 and even came in early. Capt Matt did about the same with the Weibmer crew, but they opted for catch and release.
Sunday was a treat. Shore Thing alumni, Party Perry and Magic Mike Eastman were along for the adventure. We had higher than usual water, due to a lack of tide and a SE wind. Took a few stops and some zigging and zagging, but we were able to get into the right ponds. Once we had the right combo, we made quick work of filling the box with beautiful 24-26 inch slot reds.
Capt Tom was makin it do what it do with our Bro from Tuepelo, Milton Weems. They were havin a good time in the river with the trout and reds. Takin advantage of the short ride, they were able to log some hours on the water. He said the action has been steady, with a Lil picking to get the right sized keepers.
Monday, we were off the water, and have to thank a few folks for the help. First off, the gang at the Boathouse in Lakeshore was able to give me and Capt Matt a full service oil change and help us with a few odds n ends. Those guys are the reason we are able to fish as hard as we do. Many Thanks Boathouse gang!!!
Also gotta thank the good people at the MS Department of Marine Resources. We have been working on a few projects, that they have been extremely helpful in pointing us in the right direction. Director Miller, Chief Phillips and Chief Pittman were very nice to take time to sit down with us. When ever we have needed anything from these folks, they have been more than accommodating. Very pleased with the way things are going up there, so Thank You MS DMR for all the help!
Back on the water Tuesday with the great Bobby Cleveland from Jackson, MS. Been trying to get Bobby on the water for weeks. He is a huge fan of the red fishing, and we finally got our days and weather right. He brought his old fishing partner Tommy along for a great day in the skinny water of the LA Marsh. These two have spent enough time in the ponds that I just ran the trolling motor and pointed out the fish that they seldom missed. Tom chunked a spinner bait all day and Bobby had some skirted jig contraption he got from his Bassmaster buddy Pete Ponds. Both baits worked fanstastic. The water was a little higher than I was anticipating, so it would be blind casting most of the day. They picked off a few fish on the flats, but the blind casting produced more than the sight casting. They even let me nab a few, and we even found a big bull red in one of the deeper holes leading into one of the ponds. Got our limit and took it to the house.
Fishing has been fantastic, and we have boats open most days. If you have any plans of fishing the Christmas Holidays, please let us know. With the youngsters out of school, we can do LA Marsh trips if the weather is nice or keep it in close with a near shore MS trip. Just let us know what we can do help yall enjoy the holidays on the water.
