Cat Island, Red Fish Fiesta, Nearshore Fishing Incredible!!!

What a great week we all had last week. Captains Kenny, Alex and Darren have been doing there part to keep the deer and duck numbers in check. Since we had some nice weather down here last week, we had some good trips. We had boats in the Bay, out in the LA Marsh and even out to Cat Island.
Wednesday, I got to spend all day at Cat Island assisting an environmental group. After reading their GPS at the end of the day, we walked well over 10 miles! Picked a bad day to wear rubber boots. Covering that much ground, we saw some stuff. Found plenty of treasures, but just a neat day to see that much of Cat Island.
Friday, we had 3 boats out, one in the LA Marsh and two in close on a near shore trip. Captains Matt and Jimmy Ray were fishing 3 generations with the Johnson crew. Through mutual friends of Shore Thing Charters, we have been working with a massive rental house on the Bay. The house has 5 bedrooms and 3 1/2 bathrooms and even has a private pier directly in front of the house. The house cans sleep up to 15 PEOPLE! This house have received rave reviews from our customers. Capt Matt and Jimmy Ray were even able to pick up and drop off this group on their private pier! Talk about front door service. The two boat crew of parents, grandparents and grandkids had a bang up trip. They were able to fish in close and did fantastic on the speckled trout, red fish, black drum and sheepshead. With the Christmas holidays right around the corner, if anyone is going to be in town with the kids, this is a great trip to take. Capt Matt even took quick near shore trip over the weekend with this son Gray. They made quick work of the reds, drum sheepshead and flounder. They were on the water for briefly, and they loaded the boat. The steady action and short boat rides make these near shore trip ideal for first time youngsters. The experienced "old salts" have really taken a liking them too. We can also recommend lodging, if anyone needs help with that.
I was flying solo Thursday, out in the LA Marsh with the PILEUM Group from Jackson.  We had the odds stacked against us on the red fishing. The south wind was pumping water into the ponds. High water can make for some tough fishing, because all the bait gets into the grass. We had to push deep into some ponds, that we only fish on high tides in the winter. They are a pain in the rear to get to, but it was well worth the effort. We started picking off fish here and there, but when we got to the very back of the pond, the reds were in huge packs. With the high winds and some what dirty water, we went with the Boat Monkey Corks, 18 inch leaders, 3/8 jig heads with live cocahoes. That much weight make these rigs easier to cast into the wind. Once we dialed in the packs of reds, we were able to get 25 perfect LA Marsh slot reds into the boat. Brad, who had a very powerful hook set, broke off three different fish, with the corks attached. We snagged one cork with the red still on it. One of the fish spit the hook before we could snag it. We even had another fish come back and eat TWICE! Very cool watching that cork swim around the pond, just to come back and eat another bait. It was like a scene from Jaws watching that cork swim back to us and eat again.
Looks like we are in a very good winter bite. If yall wanna get in on the fun, bring the kids, your buddies or the gang from work. We have boats open most days. If the weather is bad, we can always reschedule or cancel. Let us know if we can help yall get in on a some amazing winter fishing.
