Big Fish, Small Fish, Lotta fish and a Lotta Cool Stuff This Week (MANY PICTURES)!!!!

This week has been great all around. For the most part, the seas have been nice, bite has been steady and crews have been up for anything. Monday and Tuesday, Shore Thing Veterans, The Watts Crew were back again. They have been fishing with us for many years now, and this was one of their better outings. Jim, Alexandria, and Annabelle only wanted to fish a couple hours each day, so we stayed in MS waters. The girls got to do most of the reeling. They put on a clinic for their dad on the red fish, black drum, sheepshead, flounder, and speckled trout. Don't think we stayed more than 3 hours each day, but it was enough to load the boat with fish both days. The girls have come a long way over the years. They used to not want to hold fish and cast poles. Now they can do everything on their own. We sent them back to Kentucky with a load of fillets and a bunch of pictures.
Wednesday, Capt Kenny and I were out with the 8 person, two boat Krueger Crew. Of course had to wager a little bit with these guys. The bet was for the biggest fish (length). We got very nervous when Kenny's crew pulled up next to us. They were slinging fish over the side a fast as they could get a bait out. Red fish, flounder, drum, and sheepshead were all taking an ice nap. All we had in the boat, was a good slot red. We made up the ground quick and had the big drum all around our boat. It has been a long time since my boat beat Capt Kenny's boat at anything, but it was our day. They got us on the numbers but we took the money with a 40 inch black drum! They crew returned with a good mixed bag for supper and take home bags of fish.
My good pals Chris Walters and Effie K were in town on Thursday. We have rescheduled this trip a few times due to weather. This was our last chance to get Effie out before she flies back to Canada (Americas Hat). We went for it and went to the LA Marsh. The cool thing about fishing with this crew is it is Prison Rules fishing, everyone for themselves. I get to fish with this crew as well, and they do not allow rod passing. Since I got to play, I played with my new toys. Chris is buddies with the Boat Monkey Float Man (Tommy), so we go to try out all the different styles of corks. With the wind at our backs, you could cast any one of the corks almost out of sight. We put some miles on the Boat Monkeys today, and some came back to the dock with battle scars from the schools of bull reds we were in. Not sure of the exact count, but it was safe to say it was the most bull reds ever to be landed on my boat. Chris an I guesstimated somewhere in the high 20's or low 30's before we all quit. Poor Effie could not move one of her hands by the end of the day. Chris has even worked at the Cat Island House once last year. Great guy to have on the boat for the day, he knows his stuff.
I fished with every one of my Okuma Spinning reels today (Helios, Trio, Caymus, Avenger). That Avenger 35 is my new favorite, it just the right size, holds a ton of braided line, and has some hoarse power.
Also got to try out a cool hand made topwater bait from my friend Andrew Hunt (local boy). It is a popping, kicking topwater shrimp. He cut the mold, poured, and hand painted the bait himself. Have been saving this thing for months for the right occasion, but it is almost too pretty to throw. Two casts was all it took to land one of the bigger bulls of day. I am big fan of the Savage 3-D shrimp soft plastic lure, but I think Andrew may be on to something with this hard plastic topwater popping shrimp. Very cool.
Captains Matt, Captain Alex, and Chef Frank "The Real Deal" McNeil just got in from three days at the Cat island House. Have not got all the details or pics from the trip. It will be included in the next report. Should be a good story....
